The Montessori Way

Have you ever heard of a Montessori school? This method of education was created by Maria Montessori, an Italian physician and teacher. She came to America in 1913, the same year Thomas Edison, Helen Keller and Alexander Graham Bell endorsed her education method.

Her vision focused on a child’s natural desire for independence, desire to learn with freedom of activity, choices and movement in the classroom. She built the universal human development model that coincided with her belief that children, given the freedom to choose and act freely within an environment prepared according to her model, would act spontaneously for optimal development.

The Montessori way has helped develop some amazing minds such as:

Larry Page and Sergey Brin – founders of Google

Jeff Bezos – founder of Amazon.com

Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis – former first lady (John F. Kennedy)

Sean ‘P.Diddy’ Combs – musician

Prince William and Prince Harry – princes :)

Montessori classrooms are tailored to different age groups, personalities and the individual needs of each student. There are usually two or more teachers to one mixed-aged classroom. Mixed classrooms allow younger students to interact with and look up to older children and give older children the opportunity to mentor and support those younger than them. Because the students act freely and independently while group activities are going on, teachers are able to give students the one-on-one time each child deserves.

We had the pleasure to work with EC Montessori School on Lady’s Island in Beaufort, South Carolina. Watch the video we produced with Three Ton Tiger Productions:

Maria Montessori felt if students were allowed to develop according to their inner laws of development, they would give rise to a more cooperative and peaceful civilization.

Montessori schools are filled with fascinating educational tools, built and developed by Maria. The first time you walk into a Montessori classroom, you’ll be shocked to see students as young as 18 months, quietly working, respecting the space of others, cleaning up after themselves and working cooperatively at maintaining the balance that runs through every true Montessori school.

“The first time Lara walked into a Montessori school, she was 2 years old. We visited that same school together years later to reminisce and are now working with our local Montessori school here in Beaufort, SC. There has always been a sparkle in Lara’s eyes, so it tickled me to see the familiar light in the eyes of students at EC Montessori. The experience made me wonder why I and so many before me had gone through traditional methods of education  when clearly there is a different way that offers the foundation for a confident, motivated and cooperative individual.” - Alexander Lill

Web Design & Video Production for Alligator Soul Restaurant in Savannah, GA

Alligator Soul is one of downtown Savannah’s tippy-top restaurants. They’re known for eclectic Southern dining with a seasonal menu that utilizes farm-fresh ingredients, grass-fed meat and local day boat fish. Both locals and jet-setters will tell you, “you can’t visit Savannah Georgia and not dine at Alligator Soul”.

The restaurant is a hidden a gem in busy downtown Savannah, not on the strip. Those planning trips to the historical city and tourists on smartphones, search the web looking for the fine dining experience. The problem with Alligator Soul’s old website is that it didn’t get the fine-dining experience or moody atmosphere across in the design.

We had an absolute blast taking the reigns, photographing and filming the incredible dishes and designing a sophisticated/swanky website for one of Savannah’s best restaurants.

Photographing the amazing dishes Chef Stephen McLain cooked up was an experience! All of the food was so photogenic and scrumptious! See some of our photography for Alligator Soul:

While filming the video for Alligator Soul, we traveled to some of our top local farms in Georgia and South Carolina, like Joseph Fields Farm, who provides both states with Certified Organic produce. We met with Melissa Radford Brown and Ronald Kevin Brown, owners and operators of Kachina Farms, who proudly specialize in growing USDA Certified Organic herbs and produce for restaurants and those who appreciate real food. Georgia Buffalo gave us something unexpected. They’re dedicated to the re-birth and restoration of the American Buffalo population and supply a healthy selection of high quality, all-natural and hormone-free bison to Georgia. We filmed each family to show the community’s finest suppliers of healthy food who make top Savannah restaurants, like Alligator Soul, possible.

The menu is decadent, from their organic made cocktails to their in-house made desserts.

We captured the journey that food takes from the farm to the restaurant table. Chef Stephen McLain and his team put on a show, cooking tasty seasonal menu items using local ingredients, coming from the farms we had been to. It was such a wonderful time working with all of these passionate families and individuals. See the video below:

Real Food and Savannah River Farms

We traveled not-to-far to Sylvania, Georgia, home to Savannah River Farms. It’s a family run, sustainable and Animal Welfare Approved farm. As owners and a husband/wife team, Ben and Kellie Deen promote healthy eating and offer the finest all-natural, hormone and antibiotic-free pastured beef, pork, lamb and poultry. Their animals are raised from birth and allowed to live instinctively among their own kind on the beautiful farmland.

Next time you’re at the grocery, take a closer look at what you’re supporting. Then drive to your nearest local farms and see what real food looks like, know where it’s coming from and support them by buying their products. There is something romantic about being close to your food. It’s not a new trend or an old way, it’s the way. We’re thankful for people like the Deens and can’t wait to go back to Savannah River Farms for our next visit!
